Prenatal Massage

What is Prenatal Massage?

Pregnancy is a beautiful time, but it can also come with aches, pains and anxieties. Tailored specifically for expectant mothers, prenatal massage is a safe and natural way to ease these discomforts and promote greater well-being and happiness for both you and your baby.

These gentle massages focus on areas commonly affected by pregnancy, such as the back, joints and shoulders. Using lighter pressure and specialised techniques, prenatal massage eases aches and pains, improves sleep quality and reduces stress and anxiety. This helps you stay relaxed and positive throughout your pregnancy journey.

How Prenatal Massage Works

Our prenatal massage treatment is specifically designed for expectant mothers after the 4th month of pregnancy. Using gentle pressure and specialised techniques, our skilled prenatal massage therapist aims to ease muscular tension in the back and pressure on the knees that often come with pregnancy.

Throughout the massage, you’ll be positioned comfortably on your side with pillows and cushions. We apply natural, pregnancy-safe massage oils to promote relaxation further and reduce swelling in the legs and calf area.

A prenatal massage at Healing Health TCM Therapy isn’t just about physical comfort; it’s also a chance to unwind and de-stress during this particular time.

Benefits of Prenatal Massage

Relieve Physical Discomfort

As your body changes to accommodate your growing baby, it’s common for mummies to experience back pain, hip pain, muscle tension and headaches. Prenatal massage targets these areas, promoting relaxation and reducing discomfort.

Improve Sleep Quality

The physical and hormonal changes of pregnancy can make getting a good night’s sleep a challenge. Prenatal massage helps you unwind, eases muscle tension and encourages better sleep patterns.

Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Pregnancy hormones can cause mood swings and anxiety. Prenatal massage helps regulate stress hormones and promotes the release of the body’s natural mood elevators like serotonin and dopamine, leading to a calmer and happier you.

Stimulate Blood Circulation

Prenatal massage promotes better blood flow throughout your body, which is crucial for delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to both you and your baby. It also reduces swelling (edema) in the legs, ankles and feet that may stem from increased pressure on blood vessels.

Preparation for Labour

Prenatal massage can help prepare your body for labour by improving muscle flexibility and reducing muscle tension. This could lead to a shorter and more comfortable labour experience.

When Can I Start Prenatal Massage?

If you’re experiencing discomfort or stress during pregnancy, a prenatal massage may help to offer both physical and emotional relief as your body undergoes changes.

We would recommend waiting until the second trimester, after 16 weeks, to start prenatal massage. This is because the risk of miscarriage is significantly lowered after the first trimester.

To ensure the safety of you and your baby, it is best to consult with your doctor for better advice on whether your body is suitable for a prenatal massage.
